A Wannabe Restoration Hardware Basket January 29, 2013 By TheGoodwillGal On my recent shopping trip to Redesign by Goodwill, I found a round wicker basket that had been on my Goodwill shopping list for a couple of weeks. I love a tray I saw on line from Restoration Hardware, I’m pretty sure it would be above and beyond anything I was willing to spend. My thrifty alternative, as usual, is to shop Goodwill, and make my own version and after a week or two, I found it. So now for the transformation: I had some acrylic paints on hand so I thought I’d experiment a little. First, to tone down the light wicker color, I watered down a bit of brown paint, then using a rag, I rubbed the brown paint on the entire basket. Next, after the brown paint dried, since I didn’t have any gray acrylic paint I mixed up some white paint and a bit of black, then using a sponge brush, I started painting my basket. Then using a rag, rub the paint until I achieved the finish I liked. I noticed my paint finish was too bright and in the inspiration photo it was brown and gray, so again, using a rag, I rubbed a brown glaze over the entire basket. It was exactly what the paint finish needed. After the paint dried I brought into My House of Goodwill and now it’s resting comfortably on the family room ottoman, holding remote controls and hockey magazines. Thanks to Restoration Hardware for the inspiration and to Goodwill for providing merchandise I can restore at an affordable price.
