A Rustic Winter Centerpiece November 28, 2012 By TheGoodwillGal Last year the holiday decor in my family room/kitchen was all about sparkle and shine. This year, I’m scaling back and going with rustic and simple. Well, there might be a bit of shine in some of the decor, especially in the living room, I just can’t help myself, but in the main living space, it’s all about simplicity. Here’s what I did to keep things nice and simple on my kitchen table. When I purchased a this cozy blanket from Goodwill in September, I was craving some comfy fall weather. The blanket hasn’t gotten much use since the temps in Phoenix have been extremely mild so I decided to get good use out of it as a table cloth. Then I added this wooden toolbox from Goodwill. When I purchased it, it was just a raw wood. I painted it with one of my favorite paints to use, galvanized spray paint, it sprays and adheres on to pieces nice and smooth. After Thanksgiving every year, I stop at my local home improvement store where they have tree clippings in a cart ready to toss out. Because I use artificial Christmas trees and have no extra tree branches, I bring the clippings home to use in my decorating. They smell great and best of all, they’re free! This time I placed the greens at the bottom of the toolbox then nestled 3 Mason jars into the box. Next, I filled the jars with ice cream salt and added three battery operated votives in each jar. I like to use this type of salt for my winter decorating because it has big crystals, which look like ice, and it’s inexpensive. To complete the rustic, outdoorsy feel of the centerpiece, I added some mini trees from Goodwill, which were already wrapped in burlap, to each end of the display. This centerpiece was easy to put together and shopping at Goodwill made it affordable for me to change some of my decor to the rustic and simple look I was going for. Now, if I could just keep my holiday schedule simple, I’d be very happy gal!
